here's a little update on what happened during welcome back supper last friday night. those that couldnt make it you can have a look at some of the new faces in our block through the pictures!

i cant imagine how jenn is feeling right now after THREE trainings in one day when my arms and legs are already aching after just one training. this is due to the lack of exercise. explains why zhengquan called me a phantom HAHA.

anyway this is just to update everyone about the new stuff in our block... the trip to ubi was fruitful and we have new furniture for the rooftop!!

As we near the time for exams, please help to keep noise levels down (even if it’s before 10pm), so that everyone can have a conducive environment to study and rest. I also know that some people like to study (or relax) together, but please advise that hall rules must be kept. In particular, all non-Shearite visitors must leave the hall by 11pm and all room doors must be kept open if there are members of the opposite sex in the room. I will be making inspection rounds during this period. Please help to pass this message to all Beekers.

One other thing: Please also advise our Beekers to be careful and to ensure that all security doors are closed properly. An intruder has been spotted in a couple of the other halls.

call it sausage overdose, the juniors whip up a sumptuous meal of steamboat for the seniors. prepared with load of love and care, i'm sure everyone enjoyed themselves at the JTS. ok, i'm staying of sausages for the rest of the month.

and without a doubt, the star of the night is the lovely strawberry cheesecake that's baked by jiayi. he really put in alot of effort for this, going home specially just to bake this cake for the seniors (and the rest of us). you should have seen how worried he was over the small crack that was on the top of the cake. so everyone out there, stop calling jiayi a phantom ok???

i wonder when will the senior treat junior be? hmmm....

OMG!! I can't wait for night cycling to come!! 30th Oct! 20 more days till the ride of my life with my chosen one. U know how he asked me out? He did it in the most imaginable fashion you can ever think of. He totally swept me off my feet with his charming looks and sweet gestures. <3>

It will be a night for us to remember, as I would definitely want to hold my wedding on this day! <3>

i want to ride on a lovely pink bike with my dear schnookums, with his muscular thighs, he will definitely pedal us up the steepest slope, and across the widest river(YES, SINGAPORE RIVER is the widest river i ever know of).

Hello! All the guys and girls from Block B. So long haven't got any new posts so I thought better post something. So how is everybody? Are you all good? Another semester has just started so better start working your ass of.

Well I am here in Sh and life is nice here. Its just a little cold sometimes. We get freaky weather here, sometimes ok, sometimes really chilly. Well so if anybody wants to go to Sep or NOC, my advise is do do go for it (Although I think NOC is slightly better than Sep... hehe) It is really an experience of a life time.

So play hard while you still can. Hall life is really special and you get to make great friends and girlfriends and boyfriends too! Ask the "laojiao" (Not lanjiao) Seah and Alvin and Teckwee, they can testify to that. =)

okayyy, first off, hellloooo from UK! the weather is becoming colderr and colder.... but other than that quite fun larr! :) no cute english boys. people here drink like fish! and seriouslyyyyy!!!! they freaking party damn alot. EVERY night got party. i dunno hwo they tahan..

anyway... i'm here to update because.... knnccb!!!! I've got a freaking laundry horror story to tell! okay, all my life in sheares hall, i've met some really terrible people with REALLY AWFUL laundry ethics. okay, i've not met met them, considering the fact that I never do catch them doing their disgusting laundry habits.

BUT OMFG. today, I reallyyyyyy met with one of the worst things!! OKAY. first off, it costs bloody 60p to dry (that's 1.80 SGD), and 1.80 to wash (that's 5.40 SGD). which is already !@#$%^&*()_ tmd!! then today, i did one week's worth of laundry.. i put the stuff into the dryer and put in like 80p cuz normally 60p wouldnt dry the clothes properly.

then I closed the door adn realised that white stuff were spinning around with my clothes. and I opened it again and FUCK.... ALLL MY CLOTHES HAD WASHING POWDER STUCK ON THEM!!! super ngiam!

DAMN bloody gross lar. and there was no way i cud refund the money.. and I went to complain. the reception lady merely cleaned the dryer and say "there u can use it now!" i'm like..... -_- and she said that i just need to "dust" the powder off. and "maybe the heat will help"...

wah. i super sian diao... -_- in the end, i put all those that weren't very affected into another dryer and spent 1 freaking pound (3 SGD) to dry it all out, cuz I had no more change adn they don't give change... -_- and I took the really ngiam stuff back to handwash..

sigh. seriously... these english people super CHAO turtle! haix. nick, xuanyi and the current-laundry-i/c, aren't you glad you had to be in charge of singaporean dryers instead?! -_-

well, I guess the positive thing is I saved on powder in the second round of washing. -__-!

"Life and How to Survive It"
I must say thank you to the faculty and staff of the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information for inviting me to give your convocation address. It's a wonderful honour and a privilege for me to speak here for ten minutes without fear of contradiction, defamation or retaliation. I say this as a Singaporean and more so as a husband.

My wife is a wonderful person and perfect in every way except one. She is the editor of a magazine. She corrects people for a living. She has honed her expert skills over a quarter of a century, mostly by practising at home during conversations between her and me.

On the other hand, I am a litigator. Essentially, I spend my day telling people how wrong they are. I make my living being disagreeable.

Nevertheless, there is perfect harmony in our matrimonial home. That is because when an editor and a litigator have an argument, the one who triumphs is always the wife.

And so I want to start by giving one piece of advice to the men: when you've already won her heart, you don't need to win every argument.

Marriage is considered one milestone of life. Some of you may already be married. Some of you may never be married. Some of you will be married. Some of you will enjoy the experience so much, you will be married many, many times. Good for you.

The next big milestone in your life is today: your graduation. The end of education. You're done learning.

You've probably been told the big lie that "Learning is a lifelong process" and that therefore you will continue studying and taking masters' degrees and doctorates and professorships and so on. You know the sort of people who tell you that? Teachers. Don't you think there is some measure of conflict of interest? They are in the business of learning, after all. Where would they be without you? They need you to be repeat customers.

The good news is that they're wrong.

The bad news is that you don't need further education because your entire life is over. It is gone. That may come as a shock to some of you. You're in your teens or early twenties. People may tell you that you will live to be 70, 80, 90 years old. That is your life expectancy.

I love that term: life expectancy. We all understand the term to mean the average life span of a group of people. But I'm here to talk about a bigger idea, which is what you expect from your life.

You may be very happy to know that Singapore is currently ranked as the country with the third highest life expectancy. We are behind Andorra and Japan, and tied with San Marino. It seems quite clear why people in those countries, and ours, live so long. We share one thing in common: our football teams are all hopeless. There's very little danger of any of our citizens having their pulses raised by watching us play in the World Cup. Spectators are more likely to be lulled into a gentle and restful nap.

Singaporeans have a life expectancy of 81.8 years. Singapore men live to an average of 79.21 years, while Singapore women live more than five years longer, probably to take into account the additional time they need to spend in the bathroom.

So here you are, in your twenties, thinking that you'll have another 40 years to go. Four decades in which to live long and prosper.

Bad news. Read the papers. There are people dropping dead when they're 50, 40, 30 years old. Or quite possibly just after finishing their convocation. They would be very disappointed that they didn't meet their life expectancy.

I'm here to tell you this. Forget about your life expectancy.

After all, it's calculated based on an average. And you never, ever want to expect being average.

Revisit those expectations. You might be looking forward to working, falling in love, marrying, raising a family. You are told that, as graduates, you should expect to find a job paying so much, where your hours are so much, where your responsibilities are so much.

That is what is expected of you. And if you live up to it, it will be an awful waste.

If you expect that, you will be limiting yourself. You will be living your life according to boundaries set by average people. I have nothing against average people. But no one should aspire to be them. And you don't need years of education by the best minds in Singapore to prepare you to be average.

What you should prepare for is mess. Life's a mess. You are not entitled to expect anything from it. Life is not fair. Everything does not balance out in the end. Life happens, and you have no control over it. Good and bad things happen to you day by day, hour by hour, moment by moment. Your degree is a poor armour against fate.

Don't expect anything. Erase all life expectancies. Just live. Your life is over as of today. At this point in time, you have grown as tall as you will ever be, you are physically the fittest you will ever be in your entire life and you are probably looking the best that you will ever look. This is as good as it gets. It is all downhill from here. Or up. No one knows.

What does this mean for you? It is good that your life is over.

Since your life is over, you are free. Let me tell you the many wonderful things that you can do when you are free.

The most important is this: do not work.

Work is anything that you are compelled to do. By its very nature, it is undesirable.

Work kills. The Japanese have a term "Karoshi", which means death from overwork. That's the most dramatic form of how work can kill. But it can also kill you in more subtle ways. If you work, then day by day, bit by bit, your soul is chipped away, disintegrating until there's nothing left. A rock has been ground into sand and dust.

There's a common misconception that work is necessary. You will meet people working at miserable jobs. They tell you they are "making a living". No, they're not. They're dying, frittering away their fast-extinguishing lives doing things which are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, harmful.

People will tell you that work ennobles you, that work lends you a certain dignity. Work makes you free. The slogan "Arbeit macht frei" was placed at the entrances to a number of Nazi concentration camps. Utter nonsense.

Do not waste the vast majority of your life doing something you hate so that you can spend the small remainder sliver of your life in modest comfort. You may never reach that end anyway.

Resist the temptation to get a job. Instead, play. Find something you enjoy doing. Do it. Over and over again. You will become good at it for two reasons: you like it, and you do it often. Soon, that will have value in itself.

I like arguing, and I love language. So, I became a litigator. I enjoy it and I would do it for free. If I didn't do that, I would've been in some other type of work that still involved writing fiction – probably a sports journalist.

So what should you do? You will find your own niche. I don't imagine you will need to look very hard. By this time in your life, you will have a very good idea of what you will want to do. In fact, I'll go further and say the ideal situation would be that you will not be able to stop yourself pursuing your passions. By this time you should know what your obsessions are. If you enjoy showing off your knowledge and feeling superior, you might become a teacher.

Find that pursuit that will energise you, consume you, become an obsession. Each day, you must rise with a restless enthusiasm. If you don't, you are working.

Most of you will end up in activities which involve communication. To those of you I have a second message: be wary of the truth. I'm not asking you to speak it, or write it, for there are times when it is dangerous or impossible to do those things. The truth has a great capacity to offend and injure, and you will find that the closer you are to someone, the more care you must take to disguise or even conceal the truth. Often, there is great virtue in being evasive, or equivocating. There is also great skill. Any child can blurt out the truth, without thought to the consequences. It takes great maturity to appreciate the value of silence.

In order to be wary of the truth, you must first know it. That requires great frankness to yourself. Never fool the person in the mirror.

I have told you that your life is over, that you should not work, and that you should avoid telling the truth. I now say this to you: be hated.

It's not as easy as it sounds. Do you know anyone who hates you? Yet every great figure who has contributed to the human race has been hated, not just by one person, but often by a great many. That hatred is so strong it has caused those great figures to be shunned, abused, murdered and in one famous instance, nailed to a cross.

One does not have to be evil to be hated. In fact, it's often the case that one is hated precisely because one is trying to do right by one's own convictions. It is far too easy to be liked, one merely has to be accommodating and hold no strong convictions. Then one will gravitate towards the centre and settle into the average. That cannot be your role. There are a great many bad people in the world, and if you are not offending them, you must be bad yourself. Popularity is a sure sign that you are doing something wrong.

The other side of the coin is this: fall in love.

I didn't say "be loved". That requires too much compromise. If one changes one's looks, personality and values, one can be loved by anyone.

Rather, I exhort you to love another human being. It may seem odd for me to tell you this. You may expect it to happen naturally, without deliberation. That is false. Modern society is anti-love. We've taken a microscope to everyone to bring out their flaws and shortcomings. It far easier to find a reason not to love someone, than otherwise. Rejection requires only one reason. Love requires complete acceptance. It is hard work – the only kind of work that I find palatable.

Loving someone has great benefits. There is admiration, learning, attraction and something which, for the want of a better word, we call happiness. In loving someone, we become inspired to better ourselves in every way. We learn the truth worthlessness of material things. We celebrate being human. Loving is good for the soul.

Loving someone is therefore very important, and it is also important to choose the right person. Despite popular culture, love doesn't happen by chance, at first sight, across a crowded dance floor. It grows slowly, sinking roots first before branching and blossoming. It is not a silly weed, but a mighty tree that weathers every storm.

You will find, that when you have someone to love, that the face is less important than the brain, and the body is less important than the heart.

You will also find that it is no great tragedy if your love is not reciprocated. You are not doing it to be loved back. Its value is to inspire you.

Finally, you will find that there is no half-measure when it comes to loving someone. You either don't, or you do with every cell in your body, completely and utterly, without reservation or apology. It consumes you, and you are reborn, all the better for it.

Don't work. Avoid telling the truth. Be hated. Love someone.

You're going to have a busy life. Thank goodness there's no life expectancy.

hmmm. this place has been pretty quiet huh? haha, anyway, i decided to blog coz it's only in the past few days that it really dawned on me: hall life is over for me now. wow.

haha, since I moved home, I felt like last year, that somehow I'd be back again. it's only in these days of complete nuah-ing and disuse that I finally came to realise that I've left hall, for good. wow. 2 years. of fun, tears, laughter, friendship, crazy times, bad times and good times. I may not have had the pleasure to spend 4 years in this wonderful place but i guess, even then, I speak for many of us when I say that moving out of hall really marks the end of a chapter in life.

another chapter of life is about to begin. that's perhaps only because hall has been such an amazing experience, that it has to be itself a single chapter of our lives altogether.

next sem, i'm gonna fly to UK for exchange. part of me is exhilarated beyond words, yet another small part tells me that when I come home finally, I'm really gonna feel the void - where hall used to be. it'll be scary cuz uni life, hall life, what's the diff? haha, but who knows what will really happen huh? :)

anyway, I wanted to post photos of all the good times but i figured we all already have those. so I just decided to post some everyday stuff in hall that I think I'm really gonna miss.

my friend brought me to discover this damnnnn cool place in bugis. it's a quaint little cafe called food for thought, that sells cake, sandwiches etc. and it's pretty nice to hang out there.

but the highlight definitely is this!

it's called red velvet cake! it's layers of sponge and cream cheese. it's soo velvety and yummy I could die a happy woman eating it. :) check out the place man! :)

even though i get terrorised by the level 2 guys,
even though i play mahjong in the lounge in constant fear of getting fined,
even though i am mistaken to be indian all the time,
even though i am also reputed to be a guy,
even though all the hamsum guys are not in blk b,
even though we are always being warned to keep quite,
even though the microwave smells funny,
even though someone always takes out my laundry before its dry,
even though we don't always agree,
even though sometimes our cooking escapades aren't successful,
even though i threw a "13 yao" which cost me $12.80,
even though we can't use the mpsh till thursday,
even though we are accused of making noise,
even though the lounge sometimes stinks,
even though i hate having to pay for fridge declaration,
even though sometimes birds fly into my room,
even though i have to kill cockroaches n catch lizards for my friends,
even though the fongseng prata is not very nice n not very cheap,
even though hair always clogs the girls toilet,
even though the level 6 last cubicle is kinda leaking,
even though the vending machine sometimes eats my money,
even though fumigation on wednesdays at 9am is super annoying,
even though blk a is not a very scenic window view,
even though network tv lags,
even though i get woken up by alarm clocks tht ring at 4am,
even though on mondays the supper queue is very long,
even though on saturday nights it is deathly quiet,
even though our *lounge might be haunted*,
even though our kitchen is abused, overworked n overused,
even though the rubbish chup smell is DAMN DISGUSTING,

even though i can't say i know everyone by name,

for every reason tht makes me want to leave hall, i find 2 more to want to stay. thanks for everything, guys. :]

the following post may not make any sense whatsoever as it is being written when i am half asleep and waiting for my bladder to reach bursting point before i force myself out of my arm chair to pee and eventually to bed.

hall life is strange. its a struggle to maintain your sanity amongst the busyness of school work and the barrage of activities that you're "forced" to entertain, whether you like it or not, for the points that allow you to put yourself thru the whole damn process again.

but i guess, that's what i enjoy so much of hall life. =)

as a year 1, i didn't come for secc, i missed swoc cos i was "working" my ass of on the beaches of sentosa and ultimately was labelled the infamous "black ghost" by my SH peers and seniors. if first impressions are truly important, then "black ghost who i never see before but i heard run very fast..." - delfine ong (2005/2006) doesn't really help my image of Mr Hamsum*.

anyway, i just wanted to point out that its not what people perceive you to be before they know who you really are that matter, but who you really are when you eventually touch their lives that leaves the lasting impression. i was looking thru the blog and the pictures that we have and i realise that many of my friends whom i've grown quite close to are gonna leave in a month or so and i feel a deep sense of loss which can on be described as devastating.

pardon me for being emo but when you live with someone for an extended period of time, the bonds that you build with each other are almost super-glue strong. provided that your friendship is not tainted by the backstabbing and frontstabbing that goes with hall life. Yes. hall life is so political you can but we can give john, hillary and obama a run for their money if they come to stay in hall.

ahhhh the pains of society. cliques and all. exclusive, inclusive. who is a bitch/bastard. gossip sessions, first degrees, second degrees and what not. everyone is entitled to their own opinion. no doubt about that. however, if your opinion is based on what you hear from people and your own deductions without proof. does that entitle you to make a passing remark about something that you barely know?

let's have an example. my clique has often been labelled as exclusive. i've heard one too many "they always keep to themselves". "they dun bother to talk to us". lemme just say that that's utter bull-fucking-shit. people are close for a reason. cos they feel comfortable being in each other's company. yes, we're close. but we do not shun people if they talk to us. we're really nice people, if u look beyond the dao faces and vulgar language. although i do admit that it might be tad intimidating to try to talk to us as a group, but i'm sure you'll find that we're very approachable once you get to know us.

i've always prided myself that i can talk to most of the people in the block and i sincerely do attempt to do so, with the exception of a few. let me lay down the gauntlet here. if you think that you are more into the block than i am, then you are entitled to call me cliquish and exclusive. if you can prove that point to me, by all means do so. else, please keep your comments and such to yourself unless you can back it up with proof and evidence.

ahhh. that's off my chest. anyway, back to the point about politics and gossip. trust me, whatever you do in hall, people will know. people will find out. so don't do it if u don't want people to know. if you have a damn smelly fart, please fart discreetly. if you can't sing for nuts, please don't do it in the shower. if you've uncovered a deep dark secret, your hall mates are the best people to tell to "keep it a secret". let's face it. we're all curious idiots who can't keep our mouth shut. so in the future, think about what you wanna say before you say it. u never know what might happen. i've had my share of "close shaves" due to all these gossips in hall than the rest of my life added together.

in conclusion, my hall life has been a roller coaster of ups and downs. tears and cheers. from "black ghost" to vice chair to vice block head to year 3 moron who is turning back into black ghost. i've enjoyed all of it. i've made true friends here which i will cherish throughout my life. to those i've worked with, i hope i haven't been a total ass. to those that are leaving (graduating/not staying liao/ SEP/ NOC), i wish you all the best, may you be blessed with smiles and cheers wherever you may be. to those who will still be around, i hope you embrace your hall life like how i did mine. its not just a place in school where u sleep. its a place where you live. your second home. your second family.

BOOOOO. level 5 is reeking with germs! we have 16 rooms and now, Weising, Cheryl, Xiaoqing, Dawn, Jo and I are down with the stupid flu bug.... that's almost HALF the population on level 5 sick. BAH. flu flu go away... at least we're all on recovery hopefullly.

anywayyy. since I'm bedridden and highly immobile, I stayed in room to look through the BBQ photos and I realised we're really happy people! hee. yahhhh.

anyway, kudos to the blkcomm and super snrs, cuz many many of us really thought the BBQ was fantastic cuz everyone had so much fun... story telling, guoyong's wayang-tale, aiyah, if not for the fact that we kind of have a cinderella-no-more-happiness-past-midnight (except this is 10pm) policy, im sure it would have been a great deal more fun..

Ask XQ for the video. it was very amusing cuz cheryl, xq, tricia and I just watched their whole argument as they confused each other endlessly.

the best part is when we got to cold rock, they INSISTED on sharing their icecream again. oh bother! hahaha. okayyyyy guys, have fun at school. Jiayou for IHG and stay away from the flu!! :D

haha.. so fast.. the next sem is setting in already.. i didn't realise how fast time passed us by. now.. i'm into my 4th sem in hall already.. most prob my last sem too. a bit sad to think about it laa... but i think also that living in hall was possibly one of the best decisions i've made in my entire life...

i never thought that I'd make the best friends here or live alone and learn how to do my own laundry and buy my own groceries. I never thought that living with other people could be so fun or difficult also..

in all, i think it was all a good experience because i think after these past 3 sems, i've really become a person that my mother likes better! haha. okok. she probably wants me home more la.. but that's another story. hee.

i guess the point of this entry is really just to reflect on what an amazing time i've had in hall. from my own swoc, to the snrs, to my own blkcomm experience, to my own batchmates, to swoc0708 and now to the freshies. i mean, i've had a great time growing up in this place. sure i had my down times but now when i look back, i only remember the good times and the good friends.

i think at this point, alot of people are also very sian cuz of intensive ihg trainings, or crazy comm work sessions but i think this is part of hall life ba.. i guess, after one year of experiencing it, i can safely say it'll all work out in the end. =) and somehow.. hall life looks really great on retrospect.

maybe it's the friendships that make it all worthwhile in the end. or maybe it's the crazy fun u have when you're young and stupid. the suppers, the 12am-runs-around-school, the latenights, the lunches/dinners, the getting-scolded-by-jothi-days - in all honesty, i don't know what it really is.

but i guess, the important thing in the end, maybe is just that it is worthwhile after all.

for that reason, I'm gonna enjoy my last sem. to the max. only because i think these are stories i'll live to tell my own kids one day. =) thanks guys. this has been amazing. have a great 2008! =) =)

firstly, just wanna say a BIG THANK YOU to all the beekers who turned up to support val and me during eogm! :) and all those who would have but couldnt come cos they had sth on.. THANKS!! :) it was a confidence boost to get the reassurance from you ppl when i was feeling so rubbery all over during my speech and qna. THANKS :) yup my post is programme logistics and val's post is programme councillor! so to all the aspiring swoc0809 councillors in block b, be thankful that you will be having highly biased programme ics next year! :P (just jking.. my boss will kill me. haha) i promise to do my best and hopefully, swoc0809 will be another blast! :D

please try to contain your excitement during mahjong/talking sessions in the lounge. even if you cant, just remember to arrange the furniture back nicely before you all leave so that the lounge will neat and nice for the other beekers. similarly, things like newspapers.. please stack them tidily at a side after reading or whatsoever ok? hello people!

as promised, instructions on how to get your hands on the long-awaited photos...
for those in the domain, i.e. those that bought their laptops from nus and therefore are in the nus domain, go to start and run, then type \\u0509550. you should be able to access seah's computer then just go into the folder 'Shuai' and 'Initiation' and the photos should all be there... you can just copy all of them to your laptop..the only problem is that seah must be online for you guys to access these photos..

the other alternative would be just to visit seah(B702) or me(B416) with your thumbdrive and copy everything over.. your thumbdrive must be at least 2 gb if you want all the photos! either that or can just add us... seah's email is seah84@hotmail.com and mine is alvinthepro@hotmail.com...

oh yah and pls do add all the beekers to your msn, it makes things much easier! the contact list is on level 4...

its the time of the year again, where everyone congregates in hall, welcoming the new freshmen to our very orange family. its a joyous event, where almost anything goes, frenships are formed and bonds are strengthened.

shuai was the theme for this year's swoc, SH U And I... the name itself was a very innovative thing from the start. (although i didn't get it till the last day) it was nice to be back, being in the company of old frens and to see the new faces smiling and having fun. reminded me of the previous year when i was a swoc councillor. over the period of 10 days, the freshmen were introduced to the many aspects of hall, from the hall tours to the block and inter-block cultures of the five different blocks that are located in Sheares.

coming back as vice, it was a whole new experience.. the lao jiao experience. no more was it the on the ground action, moving and entertaining the new freshmen, but more of a overseer and nothing more. it kind of pained me to feel so left out of the games and cheers, but it was not my role to play.

i must commend my blk's councillor's on a job well done.. seeing the freshmen so bonded together, it was heartwarming. i could see that they were already giving their 110% throughout the camp, thru all the tired spells, all the complains, all the screwups and all the miscommunications, they managed to pull through the camp with exceptional results.

today marked the last day where we call the freshmen freshies and acknowledge them officially as beekers. it was also the last event before blubs and i step down from blk head and vice. it was nice to see the whole rooftop crowded with beekers from year 5 all the way down to year 1. the beekers' pledge was done, and blubs and i officially stepped down. it is also here that i want to wish nic and cheryl all the best for the coming year and to also remind them that blubs and i will be around if they ever need any advice or a listening ear. i would firstly like to thank my fabulous blk head blubs for an inspiring year working under her. my blk comm - nic, cheryl, alvin, ritchell, edward and nithya, for their patience and understanding throughout the year, and to commend them on their efforts in pulling the block together as a whole.

with many events coming up soon, ibg, sndcc, etc etc, it would be nice to see the newly initiated beekers jioing the laojiaos seniors for trainings and all other events. this is new start to a new year, let's all embrace it and work hard together as a blk =) may we be bonded like glue and stick together like family.

tonight marked the night where we commemorate the ppl who laid down our past, the people who guided us towards our future, the people who kinda watched us "grow up". yeap, those ppl are our seniors.

when i first took up vice, my relationship with the many seniors from the block was frosty, if not non-existent. i was the one who fueled the idea that seniors were our past, we were the future.. therefore i felt we had to focus more on the new and up-coming freshmen from our batch and those that follow.

luckily for me, i was working under blubs foo wui ern, for she never gave up on trying to show me the significance and importance of our seniors to the block, be it in the culture that they have set for us or the roles that they play in everyday block life. these are also the individuals that we look up to when times are tough and the ppl whom we jio back when we need talents in ibg. :)

i guess to when you just step into hall, the seniors seem to be the phantoms of the the block, but yet it is important to note their past contributions, no matter how big or small. perhaps its their time to bask in the sunshine and relax whilst the later generations take up the ropes of responsibility and leadership...

however, some of these seniors have continued to work hard for the hall scene and for the block and thus are held in high regard by their peers and juniors,

one such example is stanley, or "stanley boss" as affectionately known to some of those who have worked under him. a tireless worker, stanley has been ever present in the rag and sp sets scene, where he has salved through late hours and burned the midnight oil through the holidays to complete the arduous projects at hand every year. skilled with his hands and technically sound with his plans, stanley has been a in inspiration to the hall and block with his contributions. (thanks for the benches) :) respected by both his peers and juniors, this senior has proven that determination knows no boundaries.

another deserving special mention is our resident spartan, mr shao guoyong - a leader, a mentor and a fantastic captain. armed with his thirst for victory, guoyong has selflessly dedicated himself to hall throughout his four year stay in block b. renowned for his "passion" and the "fire in his eyes", guoyong has touched the hearts of many in the block and in the hall by his jovial nature and ability to relate to the younger generation. :P i remember the first time when i moved into hall, guoyong came up to me and uttered a barrage of nonsense, all at the same time dribbling a soccer ball outside my door. not knowing how to react, i answered, "erm yah yah..." and he thus sped down the wing with his cheeky smile and his ball. after getting to know him better, he has been quite an inspiration to me, leading the touch rug team to the championship even when he was a year 4 and nothing to gain from it (except the championship, the pride, the honour and the glory). :) nonetheless, he has remained as humble as the first day i met him.

im sure many other seniors are as deserving of praise as the two above, but perhaps i was not able to get to know you guys as much as i would have wanted to. to those leaving us, i bid you, on behalf of the block, all the best in your future endeavours, and may you excel in whatever you do.

Dear Beekers,

I'd like to thank all of you for all your endless support and encouragement! wouldnt have won it without all of you and thus i believe both ahtiong and my award goes to each and everyone of you! =) From wearing bright retro clothes to big stylo accessories to beautifully styled hair to cool shoes at the bottom. All these still cant beat the passion and support you guys have in both ahtiong and i! honestly speaking, i did feel e stress whenever you guys say we will win pageant and all. I'm not sure abt ahtiong but i really did feel e stress. hahaha.. you know la the rest of the girls all SKINNY (they are skinny so i can be SLIM.. HAHAHAHAHA) and tall and e list goes on. not tt i dun haf self-confidence is just tt when u go clothes fitting, everything seems to fit them so nicely. EVERYTHING. but i only haf a few things tt will fit me nicely. However, i've one thing that they dun. i've e support and backing from ALL of you beekers! =) and with that, it sustained me thru bash to DnD giving me more confidence and made me shine like a polished gem!

I'm really very touched that so many of you turned up for DnD and to those who didnt, i believe your "spirit" was there with the rest of us!! heehee! Despite us not having the biggest contingent there (since blk c has e most ppl) the cheerings from you guys were e loudest and e greatest of them all!!! :DDD SO clear, SO loud, SO strong and SO deafening! hahaha!

I'd like to take this chance to thank my short wing - delfine, sab, xiuyi, mae and cenying for everything!! ahahha. many of you wouldnt noe this but everytime i haf a photoshoot or videoshoot or bash or dnd all of them will be "activated" giving me their truest opinion of my overall look or they will end up lending me their things be it necklace, earrings, clothes or shoes! hahaha.. yeah so girls, THANKS man! you guys da bestest best :D hahaha!

Like what both karen and seah says, we are not only strong in the sports arena we have now proved to the other blocks we HAVE girls and we all possess Butt, Boobs and Brains! hohoho =)

I know it seems damn cheapo if i keep using the same word but really other than THANK YOU ALL i really cant seem to use any other word to substitute it le! =) so yup, thanks ALOT for giving me this chance to participate in pageant and bringing glory and honour to Block B. All of you share e joy of it all and really love u guys for everything!!

And before i end off anything, since SEAH is so paisae abt his winning and did not mention it here. I'll do it! ahaha. well, Seah Tze Hean of block B has won the TEAM MANAGER of the year 2007 (Females). And so this adds on to the list of winnings on 23rd Mar 2007. hahaha! Seah truly deserved this award. I've seen him making milo from scratch for the soccer girls, training hard with them and also dutifully inform them of trainings and all. for a guy like him, its really meticulous and i believe all other nominated TMs are way behind him. =) all e way AH XIANG!

Lastly, HAPPY BIRTHDAY NICK TITAN! =) hahaha!

a nite to remember!

for all the glitz, glam and granduer, the night of 23/03/07 was very much a beeker night. this date marked the night where sheares hall gathered together to celebrate our very best, by bestowing on them awards and expressing our gratitude towards their contribution in hall. it was a night of passion and pleasure, filled with the tremendous promise.

last night's event was hosted at hilltop garden restaurant situated at bukit batok. on first mention, many a shearite was unsure of the quality and ambience of the place. Oh were they so very very wrong. the DnD Committee, led by our very own Andre, and with the support of many other beekers, namely - jiesheng, sab, nic choy, joseph, denise, aloy, edmund, kanghao was at their wits end after their annual bash did no work to plan and thus money was in short supply. not giving up the fight, they dug deep and managed to come up with a more than adequate plan for the evening. kudos to the DnD Comm for their efforts all these months. once again, well done!!! :)

not only was the committee beeker intensive, the night was to be as well! following the trend from the previous year, the beeker section of the crowd was the most active in the lucky draw segment, with no less than 4 of the lucky draw prizes falling into beeker hands... with teckwee winning the 2nd prize!!! woo!!! haha.. a lucky draw indeed.. For US! :)

it was also heartening to see the award for team of the year going to the touch ruggers with the team being 90% block B. i must say that team captain gy has done a fantastic job at hustling each and everyone one of his team to play at their optimum. there were also awards for the CAB, where zhiqian, tongzilla, jason and kimberly bagging their gold awards that evening as well. supporter of the year was not spared as nithya, who was the most avid team sheares fan, was recognised with that prestigious award. also, both eric and xiuyi got a golds for their performances in IHG and IVP - no surprises there! :P

*edit* not that i want special mention.. i paiseh to put my own name CAN!??! T_T

but the real excitment for the night was the crowning of the new mr and ms sheares hall. our representatives were samuel (ah tiong) and lydia, both lively and confident individuals. their competition wasn't easy, but they lived up to their beeker potential by sweeping the judges off their feet with their witty answers and confident personalities. as guoyong mentioned to me before supper, "after 3 years... its has finally come back to block b!" and yes... so it has. ah tiong and lydia has done us proud by bringing the titles of mr and ms sheares 2007 back to beeker territory. they have not only proven that beekers are a force to reckon with on the sports scene, but we do too have beauty, brains and brawn.

yesterday marked the end of B-Week 2007. it was a fun and exciting experience planning something like that for the block as it was a new event and thus we were unsure of the support and response of the beekers.

the schedule was laid out as follows:
tuesday: board games galore! taboo, pictionary, carrom and monopoly.
wednesday: kampung games! blast from the past - chapteh, hide-and-seek and zero point.
thursday: inter-block supper with block E.
friday: sports fiesta - floorball and inter-year badminton.

the block was split into 4 groups (busok, bodoh, bojio and boliao) and each group was out to fight for B-week glory!

it was a plan, but as we all know, plans are meant to fail :)

B-week started out on a good note drawing support from beekers of every level. the lounge was a crowded place on tuesday nite as many gathered to have a ball of a time. taboo was exceptionally popular and it drew screams of delight and agony from the playing party. monopoly, playing at the same time, saw "i-am-damn-suay" xiuyi taking on "ah-wang" wuiern, "pay money pay money!" mae and big nic for whom i can't think of something smart to say. true to their nicks, xiuyi came up tops from the bottom with many unlucky rolls of the dice and "GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL" cards with the "support" of her teammates. it was really great seeing the excitment and laughter in the lounge - a good night indeed.

Wednesday night was kampung games but due to the poor response, the games that night had to be scraped. like i said, plans are meant to fail... sometimes :)

thursday nite's block supper with blk E was fairly successful (with much due credit to the SUPER NICE brownies... lol....) both blocks gathered in good spirits and block E's rooftop was packed to the brim. the food was good, the atmosphere was good and cross block interaction was good. it was a nite for many of the seniors to mingle with their Eekers and have a time to sit down and enjoy the antics of those who "volunteered" to play the games set by both blocks.

friday nite was sports nite where we hosted our alumnis for a game of floorball and we also had our inter-year badminton. we kicked off floor ball with gusto and the MPSH was a blur of beekers with sticks running up and down chasing a ball that was whizzing left, right, up and down with pace. if it was a good time for beekers to pick up the sport, last nite would have been considered perfect. there had long been rumors of floorball taking over hockey in the inter-hall games and thus it was fantastic that the block had some exposure to the sport. the floor was lit up with many tricks and flicks from our national hockey captain Sam "tiong kok" Nee, who dazzled the audience with out of this world dribbles and unreal control of the ball.

we then proceeded onto inter-year badminton where we saw the year 3/4s take on the alumnis and year 2s take on the year 1s. it was a nail biting scenario. with the year 2 male double pair edging out their year 1 counterparts and the alumnis showcasing their class by ousting the year3/4s out of contention. for the mixed doubles, the year 1s calmly took the game whilst the year3/4s pushed through to the finals. the two finals saw the year2s take on the alumni pairing for the males doubles and the year3/4 take on year 1s for the mixed doubles title. after a fantic battle on the court, the year 2s, came out on top, clinching the match after the duece. the mix doubles saw Ingnatius dominating the court, releasing smash after smash leaving Zibin and Szeyi dazed and confused. The scores were then tabulated and the champions for Inter-year badminton were the year1s by the point difference..!! woo!! well done! overall, the games were played in good spirit and those who made it down to the MPSH were giving a show of good sportsmanship and skills.

that officially marked the end of b-week. after a busy week, it was nice to have a quiet time to sit down and reflect on our experience. personally, even if there were some cock-ups here and there throughout the week, i am sure many found the experience to be an enriching one to say the least. the bottom line was that everyone had fun and enjoyed themselves. in the end busok won the b-week challenge *clap* *clap*.. but ultimately points didn't matter in the end.

i do hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as much as i did during this week.
